This 18th Century button is from the French Revolution.
It is made of enamel under glass, set into a metal base. The glass has
reflected in the scan.
The toppled building is the Bastille which was ransacked on 14th July
1789.
On the centre right, two birds fly to freedom.
The tree is the Tree of Liberty.
After 1790 each town and village had a tree in the central market place
that was decorated
with tricolor ribbons and a Cap of Liberty.
The motto means "Priviledges Conquered".
The early buttons supporting the revolution were much cruder, as people
needed to wear them quickly,
showing support for the revolution, so that they would avoid the guillotine.
